European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
