Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Squad Versus India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series against India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a surprise selection.

Performance Issues Lead to Omission

Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI team after managing only a single run in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI innings.

The 31-year-old has featured in 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes

Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

The left-hander may to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia look for a fix to their opening batting issues.

Bowling Additions and Injury Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the lead up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures

Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from 29 October.
